What I Wish Someone Told Me Before Buying My First Preschool

Buying a preschool is an exciting milestone. For many, it marks the start of a dream coming true. I know this firsthand because I was once a Montessori teacher who took the leap to purchase a small school and transform it into a Montessori program. I was full of passion and motivation, eager to make a difference in children’s lives. What I didn’t expect was how much more there was to learn beyond the classroom walls.

Owning a preschool means managing much more than just curriculum and teaching. It involves staffing, licensing, parent communication, budgets, marketing, enrollment, leadership and countless daily decisions behind the scenes. Looking back, I realize there are several key lessons I wish I had known before stepping into preschool ownership.

Systems Keep the School Running Smoothly

One of the biggest surprises was how much a great school depends on solid systems. Passion and a strong curriculum are essential, but they don’t keep the school organized or running efficiently. I quickly learned that without clear processes for enrollment, billing, staff scheduling and communication, things can become chaotic.

Hiring the Right Team Shapes Your School’s Success

I underestimated how crucial hiring is in preschool ownership. The right team can make or break your program. I learned to look beyond resumes and certifications to find people who share the school’s values and passion for early childhood education.

Growing Enrollment Takes Patience and Persistence

Many new owners expect enrollment to grow quickly, but it usually takes time. I learned that building trust with families and the community is a slow process. Marketing efforts like open houses, local partnerships and word-of-mouth referrals gradually increased interest.

Managing Cash Flow Is as Important as Passion

Passion drives preschool ownership, but cash flow keeps the doors open. I recommend setting up a budget with a buffer for surprises and tracking monthly cash flow carefully. For example, I learned to invoice families promptly and follow up on payments to avoid cash shortages. Balancing passion with financial discipline is key to long-term success.

Asking for Help Is a Sign of Strength

Owning a preschool can feel overwhelming, especially at the start. I thought I had to figure everything out on my own, but asking for help made a huge difference. I reached out to other preschool owners for specific challenges.

This support helped me avoid common mistakes and gave me confidence in decision-making. Whether it’s legal advice, marketing guidance or emotional support, seeking help is a smart strategy, not a weakness.

Preschool Ownership Is About More Than Business

Most importantly, I learned that owning a preschool is about caring for families, supporting teachers and shaping children’s lives. It’s a responsibility that goes beyond running a business. Every decision affects the community you serve.

Although I eventually sold my school, the experience taught me lessons that still guide me today. It also revealed my true passion: helping others navigate the journey of buying, selling and growing preschools.

If you are thinking about buying your first preschool or preparing to sell one you’ve built, remember you don’t have to do it alone. Every school has a story, every owner has a vision and every transition deserves thoughtful guidance.
