Owning a Montessori School: A Journey of Growth and Discovery
Owning a Montessori school was a dream I held for years. Before I helped others buy and sell preschools, I spent many fulfilling years as a Montessori teacher, working with children ages 3 to 12. My favorite age group was third grade, where I witnessed incredible growth and curiosity every day. When the opportunity arose to purchase a small school alongside a parent of one of my favorite students, I jumped at the chance. We transformed that school into a thriving Montessori program. What I didn’t expect was how much I would learn beyond teaching itself.

The Reality of School Ownership
Owning a school is very different from teaching in one. I quickly realized that my role expanded far beyond education. I was managing a transition from a traditional program to Montessori, training teachers new to the method and introducing families to a different approach to learning. I wore many hats: administrator, marketer, mentor, and sometimes even mediator. Each day brought new challenges and decisions that required skills I hadn’t anticipated needing.
For example, I had to learn how to balance budgets, handle enrollment fluctuations, and communicate effectively with parents who were unfamiliar with Montessori principles. These tasks demanded patience and flexibility. I also discovered the emotional weight of school ownership. Every decision affected not only the children but also the teachers and families who trusted us with their education.
Navigating the Pandemic and a Difficult Decision
Then the pandemic hit. Like many school owners, we faced uncertainty and tough choices. We decided to sell the school, not because it couldn’t succeed, but because I realized that running a school was not the path I wanted to continue on. The experience was bittersweet. Letting go of something I had poured my heart into was hard, but it opened my eyes to what truly mattered to me.
This period taught me resilience and the importance of knowing when to pivot. It also deepened my understanding of the challenges school owners face daily, especially in preschools, where the stakes feel so personal and the community is tight-knit.

Discovering a New Passion in Helping Others
Looking back, owning a Montessori school became one of the greatest learning experiences of my life. It gave me firsthand insight into the emotions, challenges, and decisions that school owners face. More importantly, it helped me discover where my true passion lies—not in running a school, but in supporting others through the journey.
Today, I guide buyers and sellers through important transitions in the preschool world. I help them understand what to expect, prepare for challenges, and make decisions that align with their goals and values. This work feels deeply rewarding because I know the complexities involved and can offer practical advice based on real experience.
Lessons for Teachers and School Owners
If you are a teacher considering school ownership or a current owner navigating change, here are some lessons from my journey:
Expect the unexpected: Running a school involves more than teaching. Be ready to take on roles in management, communication, and problem-solving.
Build a strong support network: Partner with parents, teachers, and community members who share your vision. Collaboration makes transitions smoother.
Communicate clearly and often: Families new to Montessori or any educational approach need guidance and reassurance. Transparency builds trust.
Know when to pivot: Sometimes the best decision is to change direction. Listen to your instincts and be open to new paths.
Focus on your passion: Identify what part of the journey excites you most. Align your work with that passion for long-term fulfillment.
Moving Forward with Confidence
Owning and selling a school taught me that life’s biggest lessons often come from unexpected places. The experience shaped my understanding of preschools and school ownership in ways no classroom ever could. It also showed me the value of helping others navigate their own journeys.
If you are thinking about buying or selling a preschool, or if you are a teacher dreaming of ownership, remember that every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Embrace the process, seek support, and stay true to your passion. The path may twist and turn, but it will lead you to where you are meant to be.

The Importance of Community in Education
In the world of education, community plays a vital role. Schools are not just places of learning; they are hubs where families come together. Building a strong community can enhance the educational experience for everyone involved.
Engaging Families
Engaging families is crucial. When parents feel connected to the school, they are more likely to support its mission. This can be achieved through regular communication, events, and opportunities for involvement.
Collaborating with Local Businesses
Collaboration with local businesses can also enrich the school community. Partnerships can provide resources, sponsorships, and unique learning opportunities for students.
Fostering Inclusivity
Inclusivity is key in creating a welcoming environment. Schools should strive to embrace diversity and ensure that all families feel valued and included.
Celebrating Achievements
Celebrating achievements, big or small, fosters a sense of belonging. Recognizing the hard work of students, teachers, and families builds a positive school culture.
Conclusion: A Journey Worth Taking
The journey of owning and selling a preschool is filled with lessons and growth. It requires dedication, resilience, and a willingness to adapt. As I reflect on my experiences, I am grateful for the opportunities to learn and grow.
If you are on a similar path, remember that you are not alone. Seek support, embrace challenges, and stay true to your passion. The journey may be complex, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Together, we can create vibrant educational communities that nurture the next generation.
